Acceptable use policy
Last updated 1 September 2026
Open Research Fund works because funders trust the applications that come through it and researchers trust the list. These rules protect both. They apply to the website, the applications we prepare, and the public API.
1. Be truthful
Everything you give us to build your profile or an application must be accurate: your credentials, your affiliation, your publications, your prior funding, and the results you describe. Do not present fabricated, plagiarised, or misattributed work, and do not approve an application that contains a claim you know to be false.
2. Apply only where you are eligible
Do not ask us to apply for a programme you know you do not qualify for, whether by country, career stage, institution type, or field. Country-specific programmes in the list are for labs located in that country; we do not help route around residency or affiliation requirements.
3. One account, your own
Accounts are for the researcher or lab they are registered to. Do not share credentials, create accounts for other people without their knowledge, or use the service on behalf of an organisation you do not represent.
4. Awarded funds
Funds we hold for you are restricted to the purposes set by the funder. Do not ask us to transfer, disguise, or spend them in ways the award terms forbid, and do not use the wallet to move money that did not come from an award.
5. The public API
The opportunities API is free and open for non-commercial use: internal dashboards, lab newsletters, research tools, and academic work are all welcome. Stay within the published rate limits, identify your client honestly, and do not scrape the website to get around them. If you republish the data, say that it came from Open Research Fund and keep the links pointing at the funder's own pages.
Do not resell the data, wrap it in a paid product without asking us, or use it to send unsolicited marketing to funders or researchers.
6. Do not interfere
Do not probe, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the service, other users' accounts, funder systems we connect to, or our infrastructure. Do not submit content designed to manipulate how we or a funder evaluate an application.
7. Reporting a problem
If you find a security issue, a programme in the list that is fake or discontinued, or a link that goes somewhere it should not, tell us and we will fix it. We will not take action against anyone who reports a problem in good faith.
8. Enforcement
We may withdraw an application before submission, suspend API access, or close an account that breaches this policy. Where a breach involves funds or a funder, we may have to tell the funder and, where required, the relevant authorities. If we hold funds for you when an account is closed, they are returned as the award terms require.
9. Relationship to our terms
This policy forms part of our terms of service with Open Research Fund Ltd., a company limited by guarantee incorporated in Singapore, and is governed by the laws of Singapore in the same way.
Open Research Fund Ltd. is a non-profit company limited by guarantee incorporated in Singapore under the Companies Act 1967. It has no share capital and no shareholders; any surplus is applied to its purpose of helping researchers obtain funding.
